HOW DOES IT WORK?

In times when we are moving closer to a cashless economy, G-pay is one of the most popular apps used to make payments. As per our survey, almost half the students in FLAME university use G-pay.
When you pay someone, like an auto driver, once the transaction is complete he has all your information, including your bank account information, and your phone number. In the past six months, we have seen cases where the person sends you a small amount of money via G-pay after you travel in their auto. They then call you, and harass you until you return the money. Women have reported cases in which auto and cab drivers texted them hours after their cab ride and behaved inappropriately.

n September 2021, the Mumbai Police arrested two auto drivers for allegedly duping passengers of over Rs 3 lakh using a fake UPI app. In another incident, a cab driver in Hyderabad was arrested in August 2021 for cheating a passenger of Rs 7,000 using a similar modus operandi.

In Gujarat alone, 70% of complaints about online financial scams in the past year were about UPI payment fraud.
Between January 2022 and February 2, 2023, the Gujarat CID (Crime) received 88,000 cybercrime complaints on its 1930 helpline. As many as 78,005 citizens had called to report online financial fraud. Of these, 52,575 cases, or 70%, were about UPI fraud.

OUR GOAL

We aim to inform people about the dangers around UPI payment, specifically university students, who travel and primarily use UPI. We also provide a platform for people who have faced harassment through UPI payment to come up and share their experiences.

Story

We are a group of students who have been part of the same class for the past two months. Our professor shared her experience, where an auto driver texted her late at night after she travelled in his rickshaw.Since we heard this, we were concerned for our peers and decided to do this project, thereby providing information on how to avoid such dangers.
